What is drip edge?

Drip edge is a thin metal flashing strip installed at the edges of a roof to direct water runoff into gutters and shield the fascia and underlying structure from moisture.

A drip edge is an L-shaped metal flashing strip, typically made of aluminum or galvanized steel, that runs along the perimeter of a roof at the eaves and rakes. It sits between the roof decking and the gutter (or along the rake if no gutter exists) to manage water runoff and protect the house structure.

The component works by creating a controlled path for water. As rain or snow melt drains from the roof surface, the drip edge directs that water into the gutter system rather than allowing it to run behind the gutter or down the fascia board. Without it, water can seep into the soffit, fascia, or the wall cavity, causing rot, mold, and structural damage over time.

Roofers in the Hartford Metro area install drip edge as part of new roof installations and replacements. Building codes in Connecticut typically require it on new roofing work. The flashing comes in several styles, with eaves drip edge featuring a more gradual bend and rake drip edge (also called flashing) bent more sharply to shed water away from gable ends. Proper installation includes nailing or screwing it in place before underlayment or shingles go down, with adequate spacing to allow water to flow freely into the gutter.

Even on existing roofs, a missing or damaged drip edge can lead to expensive water intrusion repairs. Many Hartford-area contractors address drip edge damage during inspections or as part of roof replacement projects to prevent long-term moisture problems.
