What is EPDM roofing?

EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane applied as a single sheet to flat or low-slope roofs, widely used on residential additions and garage extensions.

Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is a synthetic rubber product manufactured into wide sheets and installed as the weatherproofing layer on flat or very low-slope roofs. Contractors in the Hartford Metro area commonly use EPDM on residential additions, garage extensions, and outbuildings where traditional pitched shingles are impractical or undesirable.

The material comes in rolls and is secured to the roof deck using mechanical fasteners, adhesives, or both, depending on the installation method and building conditions. EPDM sheets are typically black, though other colors are available. The membrane is flexible and resistant to UV exposure and weather, making it well-suited to Connecticut's seasonal temperature swings and freeze-thaw cycles.

Installation involves sealing seams and edges carefully to prevent water infiltration, since standing water or poor drainage can lead to failure. The membrane itself is durable, but performance depends heavily on proper installation and adequate roof slope to shed water. EPDM roofs may require occasional maintenance, including clearing debris and addressing any punctures or seam separation.

Contractors working on roof replacement projects often recommend EPDM when flat roof area needs weatherproofing, since the single-sheet installation is faster and generally more economical than some alternatives. It remains a standard choice for non-traditional roof shapes across the region.
