What is an ice dam?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the eaves and edges of a roof during winter freeze-thaw cycles, blocking meltwater from draining and forcing it underneath shingles into the home.
When winter snow on your roof melts from heat escaping through the attic, that water runs down toward the cold eaves, where it refreezes into a thick ridge of ice. This barrier, called an ice dam, traps liquid water that continues to melt higher on the roof.
