What is valley flashing?

Valley flashing is the metal or membrane material installed where two roof slopes converge, designed to direct water runoff downward and protect against leaks in this high-stress junction.

Where two roof slopes meet, water naturally flows toward the inside corner, creating what roofers call a valley. Valley flashing is the metal or membrane lining installed in this channel to direct water safely down and off the roof. Typically made from aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper, it sits beneath shingles or other roofing material and channels runoff toward gutters or downspouts.

Valleys are among the highest-wear spots on any roof because they concentrate heavy water flow and are prone to ice dam formation in northern climates like Connecticut. Debris also collects here, holding moisture against the material. Improper flashing installation, failed sealants, or gaps between the flashing and roofing layer leave these areas vulnerable to leaks that can penetrate into attics and walls.

Quality valley flashing installation requires correct overlap dimensions, secure fastening, and compatible sealant work. When water finds its way behind failing valley flashing, damage often spreads quickly because the concentrated flow accelerates wood rot and structural decay. Most roof replacement projects include close inspection and replacement of valley flashing, especially in homes with multiple roof slopes or additions.
